ximenI've spent the past couple months being anxious and upset. It's been sort of hard to stay in Seattle, where I'm in a state of pre-move limbo. I'm unemployed (curse you, Census, for requiring a driver's license!), I'm done with school here and haven't started school in New Jersey yet, and it doesn't really make sense to volunteer or take classes or try and make new friends when I'll just be leaving in July. So instead I'm spending too much time on my computer and having trouble getting up the energy to even do the things that I need to do, or that I usually enjoy. I've been wasting time and feeling bad about it.
So a couple of weeks ago, I made my decision: instead of moping around anymore, I'm following Elaine's lead and going to China. I walked down to the travel agent's the very next day. I decided this at the last minute, which limited my ticket options somewhat, but I was able to get tickets for a trip leaving tomorrow (the 7th) and coming back on the 24th. I don't have a really clear plan yet for what I will do there, but I will be going to Shanghai, Chengdu, and Xi'an (with El!).
I'm going on this trip for a few different reasons. My spoken Chinese has suffered a lot since graduating, so I'm hoping this trip will help serve as a refresher. I also have been wanting to go back to China for a while, since while I was there I didn't do much travel, and I've always regretted not going to Xi'an and Chengdu. I've also been spending too much time on my computer lately, so I'm hoping it will be good for me to have the Pacific Ocean between me and my laptop, and that having to rely on hostel PCs and internet bars will keep me from just staring at a screen. I'm also going to shake myself out of the some of the lethargy and general blah feelings. And finally, I want to try traveling on my own, and see if I can manage it.
Livejournal will probably be blocked there, but I should be able to post from my Dreamwidth account (I knew there was a reason I got one of these!). This post is also a test to make sure that I can. And I will be able to read any comments that get left, since they get emailed to me, but I won't be able to reply. Alternately, you can read/comment on the DW page itself.
